MLB'S OLDEST TEAM HAS LONG LEGACY
The 2024 Cincinnati Reds Caravan made a brief stop at Jackson’s ParksEdge Event Center on Thursday, Jan. 25. The event was broadcast live on Total Media’s WKOV Radio (96.7 FM) with The Radio’s JJ Hale hosting. Pictured is Jackson youngster, Bryner Wooten (center) just after his baseball was autographed by retired Reds star Todd Benzinger (left) and Reds Vice President of Player Development Shawn Pender (right). Benzinger caught the ball to record the final out of the Reds 1990 World Series championship.
Also, on the Reds’ panel were players: Andrew Abbott, a pitcher with an 8-6 record in his first year with the Reds in 2023; Julian Aguiar, the 2023 Minor League Pitcher of the Year; and talented up-and-coming prospects Rece Hinds and Sal Stewart. Hale also made the announcement that the Reds’ broadcast coverage area is being expanded this year. The broadcasts are being moved from Sports Radio (105.3 FM) to 97.7 FM The Bull. This station has a stronger signal to better serve more areas. For more on the event see our Red's Page.Smal town scoops

Tourism as an economic driver
- While keeping natural, small-town life that residents hold dear
The recent growth in Vinton County, Ohio tourism offers opportunities and challenges for the coming years. The new tourism buzzword is “monetizing” while providing income to local businesses, musicians, crafters and produce growers. The challenge for the local government in ensuring tourism-related growth occurs in an orderly and meaningful way.
The county is building a calendar of popular events, such as the Southern Ohio Forest Rally -- which has become a red-letter event. The McArthur streets and businesses were filled on Saturday, June 8 for the Southern Ohio Forest Rally. Professional racing star Travis Pastrana was on hand to meet with the crowds and race through the Zaleski State Forest.
Another way to monetize tourism is moving the “Midnight at Moonville” Tunnel event to McArthur. I find this a good move. The tunnel is remote, and the parking and shuttle services have worked well -- but wet weather makes field parking difficult. I have covered it, and while the event went well -- organizing at the tunnel requires much labor with preparation. The monetary value only extends to some vendors located there. Having it in McArthur, with limited events at the tunnel, gives the county a unique local holiday and a chance for businesses to attract out-of-town dollars.

Mornin' Y'all! And thank ya, Lord, for another day.
This morning, I'm reminded of the story about the prideful rooster. It goes something like this. Early each morning, the rooster hopped up on the fence post and crowed with all his might. Soon after, the sun rose and the farm came to life. In time, the rooster came to believe his crowing was responsible for all that happened afterwards. One day, the rooster decided to show everyone how important he was. He would not crow, the sun would not rise and nothing would happen on the farm. As he sat back and did nothing, he was shocked to see the sun come up as usual, the hustle and bustle of the farm got underway as usual....and most shocking of all, no one even noticed that the rooster didn't crow.
Some people are like that. They're so full of themselves, they think the sun rises and sets around them. Don't be guilty of "rooster syndrome." One day, you might not show up and everyone will realize they can make it fine without you.
Y'all have a great day! And be careful out there.

Appalachian crafter and statements passes

- One of my favorite songs is “Three Wooden Crosses” by Randy Travis. The lyrics speak of leaving a legacy long after passing away. Dr. Ivan Tribe of McArthur falls into that category. He left behind a legacy of books, radio recordings, and papers--along with pictures of Southern Ohio and the Appalachian region. The University of Rio Grande History Professor was a private man on the civic front--but a public man behind the pen and radio microphone. He influenced thousands of students over the years and became an institution at the University. The University also has a special calling through its unique relationship with Wales--bringing the region international attention.
- The professor had a deep knowledge of music, coal mining heritage, oral traditions, and contributions to the nation. Dr. Tribe also wrote on West Virginia and the journey the Appalachian People have come through. Dr. Tribe’s books show that pre-internet society was creative, resourceful, and had a system of creating lasting legacies. The Wheeling Jamboree Book is filled with pictures--including a young Brad Paisley.
- Tribe and co-author Professor Jake Bapst penned the books while he hosted the Horn Pipe and Fugue Radio Show with his wife Deanna. The program aired on WOUB (91.3 FM ) in Athens and their network--later renamed OU Public Media. He and Deanna would describe the artists, the sessions makeup, what year it was, and the band members. There are still some radio stations such as WSM in Nashville, WPAQ in Mt. Airy, NC and some Facebook podcasters who have heritage aspects to their formats.
- Dr. Tribe kept us grounded and I think people should be proud of their heritage. He was proud of his Appalachian culture--but had respect for others. Dr. Tribe believed education is the key to understanding--and researching the past sets the tone for the future. . I believe circumstances twist around every few years but in different fashions. The Amazon shoppers reflect the Sears and Roebuck shoppers Dr. Tribe often wrote about. The way they ordered or paid for the item may not have been the same--but the fact they are having items delivered is the same. I think we are more alike than we believe, and more traditions exist than we think. An old saying says those who ignore the past--are doomed to repeat it.”
- Many people find the world fast and complicated --and finding denominators seems to be more difficult than it has ever been. It is good we had someone like Dr. Tribe who showed us the answers to our problems are not out there but from within ourselves. In the words of Randy Travis, it is what you leave behind that counts. Dr. Tribe will be with us through his work--as it influences and informs people for generations to come.
- Total Media extends condolences to Deanna and salutes Dr. Tribe for a well-lived life.

Front Porch Thoughts Gene Redwine: Sunday services of old
Mornin' Y'all! And thank ya, Lord, for another day.
The older I get, the more I appreciate each new day. My favorite time is early morning, enjoying a good cup of porch coffee, feeling the cool, morning breeze, listening to the birds sing, conversation' with the Good Lord, thanking Him for sending hiss son to pay my sin debt, thanking him for all the ways he's blessed me, for the loving family and all the wonderful friends he's placed in my life down through the years.

. I realize the things I'm most thankful for are the things money can't buy. Life isn't always easy but
in spite of all the struggles and all the ups and downs, it really is a beautiful life. I wish I had appreciated it more when I was younger. I'm reminded of a quote attributed to Benjamin Franklin, "We get old too soon and wise too late." This morning, I pray that God will pour out blessings upon you and your family and that you'll be mindful of just how blessed you are.
