The Mt. Airy, North Carolina area is an Appalachian Heritage Travel destination for old-time music enthusiasts, historians, and nature lovers. The town on the north tip of the state is where famous actor Andy Griffith grew up and thousands of people flood there. The visitors see the "Mayberry part: of town and see the museum dedicated not only to the Andy Griffith show-- but to Matlock and Griffith's music career as well. During our trip there, my wife Susan and I enjoyed the charm and historic venues. Susan sat at Andy's Desk at the Mayberry Courthouse: and saw the squad car rides. We went to Opie's Candy Store, Floyd's Barber Shop, and, of course, the Snappy Lunch. It is one of the businesses the town is known for around the world. The locale is an iconic 1923 diner and features their famous pork chop sandwiches. It is a nice place and decorated with Andy Griffith Show momentous and pictures. It was mentioned by Griffith in an early episode. Across the street from the Snappy Lunch is the historic Earl Theater. It is a home to old-time Mountain, Bluegrass and Traditional Country Music. Sometimes a trip does not always go as planned. The Earl was one of the reasons I wanted to go there. Due to the limited time we had and Susan not feeling well, we did not go inside. I did enjoy listening to the local radio station WPAQ AM-740 which is one of the few stations to program bluegrass, folk, and gospel music. The city's signature event of the year there is Mayberry Days held in late September. During the event, actors display the characters. Several actors including the Dillard (Darlings). Maggie Patterson (Charlene Darling) and Ronnie Schell (Duke on Gomer Pyle); Ronnie Howard (Opie) has been there. There is so more to Mt. Airy than music and heritage. There are lakes. camping and many modern stores and restaurants. To Susan and I, the downtown area is the best. We also took a quick spin over to Pilot Mountain, about 12 miles on the four-lane-to see the mountain and town. If traveling south, Mt. Airy is a wonderful travel destination and worth a visit.
