Country music legends Doug Stone and Terry McBride drew a full house to the Scotty’s on 1st Stage in downtown Wellston for a combined show on Saturday evening, Feb. 17. The opening act was Southern Ohio regional favorite Charlie Manring. The show was the second one Scotty’s on 1st has presented in its quest to bring national country music acts to Jackson County and the region. Stone and McBride took the stage together and alternated between the songs.Stone is from Marietta, Georgia and charted four number-one songs in the early 1990s. He is both a ballad singer and a neo-traditional country vocalist and has been a hit both ways.
His number-one songs include “Jukebox With a Country Song,” which was a two-week chart-topper on the neo-traditional side.
On the ballad side, he hit with “I Was Too Busy Being in Love,” “Why Didn’t I Think of That?” and “I See You in a Different Light.”)Stone has also rendered sad tunes such as “Fourteen Minutes Old” and “Come in Out of the Pain.” In the same realm, Stone’s best-known hit was one of the saddest songs ever performed in country music history. It is entitled “Better Off in a Pine Box.”
The crowd was waiting for Stone to perform the tune as most critics called it his best-remembered hit. The song charted at number four on the country charts but was popular with disc jockeys and fans and is still played on classic country stations.

Sacred Ground
The crowd was also receptive to McBride. The Texas native came to national prominence with two stints as the lead singer for McBride and the Ride. The band’s biggest hit was “Sacred Ground,” which charted at number two on the country Top-40 charts. Audience members were well in tune as they sang along with McBride. The band’s other big-chart numbers include “Heart on the Run,” “Going Out of My Mind,” “Just One Night, “and “Love on the Loose.” McBride and Stone interacted with the crowd, and everyone enjoyed the show.
Scotty’s on 1st owner Scot Sturgill was pleased with the show and glad some of Stone’s and McBride’s fans traveled to attend.“We had a great turnout,” said Sturgill. “We opened the doors at 5 p.m. and were packed by 5:30 p.m. The show was good for us and other businesses in Wellston and Jackson.”
The positive vibes were in the building all day as the crowd felt the presence of two big stars. Sturgill noted they put on a clean show and it turned out very well. There were also fans from Cleveland, Albany, and Rochester, NY. More music is coming to the Scotty’s on 1st stage, including rising star Whey Jennings, the grandson of Waylon Jennings, on Thursday, March 15. Also, Andy Griggs is booked in May, and Wade Hayes in June.
