  • The village of Zaleski is at a turning point as it strives to build a tourism-based economy. Their story is iconic as it includes the influence of a Polish Count along with mining and railroad history. Zaleski has not been able to cash in on the one million plus visitors Lake Hope has or the surging popularity of the Hocking Hills region. The Vinton County Convention and Visitors Bureau hopes to change that with a railroad museum and a new parking lot on the Moonville Rail Trail. The CVB is hoping the Fisher Building will be renovated into a restaurant a concert hall-- and a convenience store retailer will locate there. Eureka Spring, Arkansas, Floyd, Virginia, and Nashville, Indiana areas could be roadmaps to follow. They all have tourism-based economies and regional draws. The CVB and Zaleski officials will keep working to expand tourism.

As I think about long-term tourism projects, transforming State Route 93 to a super two-lane route to US 33 at Logan is worth considering. An enhanced highway would boost tourism and make travel safer. In tourist areas, a four-lane distracts tourism. A super two-lane, though, with wide shoulders is better for travelers and property developers. Additionally, a third lane addition on both SR 93 and US Route 50 through McArthur would be a positive step.
The west side of McArthur has schools, retail businesses, and sports travelers. The north side has several businesses, county-owned buildings, and fairgrounds. The grounds are also used more often in the off-season for events.

The Village of Hamden and Clinton Twp. may have opportunities coming in property redevelopment. The county has included the former Hamden Junction Restaurant in its demolition list. Mayor Chuck Boyer hopes the next round of Brownfield funding includes the former Hamden gas station property. The Hamden Junction is a large section of land located just outside the village--and near South Elementary School. Once the building is removed--and the site is cleared, it could become a prime commercial spot. The same is true for the old gas station razing, which is also good for the environment. The house located next to the gas station is also on the demo list. The Mayor hopes the former restaurant near the car wash also be reopened and business increases.

We wanted to tip our hat to and extend condolences to the family of the late business owner Katie Matteson. The county native was a longtime business owner of the Hotel McArthur, the Buzzard's Nest and Katie Katie's restaurant and bar. The Vinton County CVB will keep part of her legacy alive in the renovated hotel. The name Buzzard’s Next will be incorporated into it. She made a strong mark in the county.

Viking football returns to the airwaves on August 19th when they travel to Unioto to open the 2022 season. Second-year coach TJ Carper appears to have a good team under his belt and is eying a TVC Ohio title and another playoff appearance. All the Vikings games can be heard on WYRO locally--and globally on the Total Media App. Bob Grillo and Jeff Thacker will be calling the action. We will also have expanded pictorial and video coverage on the new website The Telegram will unveil soon. Both the Ap and the new website are great ways for people who are leaving the area for the military, business or retirement, or vacation to have a slice of home. With limited network-imposed exceptions, all four stations are on 24 hours a day.

On a personal note, I saw country music legend Kathy Mattea at the Jackson County, West Virginia Fair near Ripley. Mattea has collected a long string of hits--including her signature songs 18 Wheels and Dozen Roses and Where have you been.” The West Virginia native is also the host of the nationally heard Mt. Stage Radio Program.  For those country legend fans, Mark Chestnut will be appearing at the Jackson Apple Festival in September as well.
I hope everyone has a nice summer and is well will see you out there soon.
